A Letter from Kate Morris

Dear Friends, Clients, Colleagues, and Community,

This weekend’s large-scale search operation concluded. While Charles is not yet home, our resolve at Hosch & Morris remains steadfast as we transition to coordinating search efforts from Dallas.

In my last face-to-face conversation with Charles, I asked him an unusual question: What is your primary emotion? He answered warmly, without hesitation, with a light in his eyes that seemed to come from somewhere deep and settled within: Gratitude.

To be around someone who lived that way—it changes you. To be his law partner was the defining honor of my professional life, and so much more than that. To be trusted by him, to build something meaningful together, to witness daily his profound decency and wisdom—these were gifts I will always carry with reverence. I loved him. I love him still.

To lose him is devastating; to lose him without answers is a weight that defies words—one that is shared by his students, our clients, our colleagues, and our community. It will take all of us time to process this loss. I hope we each find the help and grace we need.

Yet even in this hour, the spirit of gratitude and the radiance Charles brought to every encounter lives on. I am immensely grateful for everyone who has supported this effort—the searchers, volunteers, family, friends, and countless others who have stood with us.

In particular, our clients have shown extraordinary patience and understanding as we’ve navigated the impossible task of continuing our work while searching for Charles. Your flexibility and compassion have meant more than we can express. To the attorneys and firms who have stepped in to handle referrals and assist with matters, thank you for your professionalism and care. You have allowed us to focus on Charles while ensuring that our clients continue to receive the representation they deserve.

And in ways we could never have anticipated, good has come from this tragedy. Our families have become deeply bonded, united in our love for Charles and our determination to find him. Additionally, I have been given the gift of being with the Hosch family to witness Charles’s granddaughter take her first steps—a bittersweet moment of hope and continuity that he would have treasured, and that now belongs to all of us who carry his memory.

So, in the face of the unimaginable, we are learning what Charles always knew—that gratitude and hope are not the absence of pain, but the choice to find light even in the darkest places. May we all keep choosing that light, together.

With gratitude and hope,

Kate
